Wait! Did you see that? "We come in peace," said the message on his uniform. Having seen his green head and her green hair, you could be forgiven your moment of doubt, a doubt confirmed when you spy the hapless human hostage confined to the mobile holding cell.

If you could scream, you would, but when you turn for help, you see only grotesque and distorted and Munchkinesque creatures advancing toward you, muttering their unearthly chant: Triggertreet, Triggertreet.

The last two months of the year are always filled with the sounds of holiday cheer: the jingle of bells, the crunch of shopping bags being filled with goodies and holiday music being played on our Pandora stations. But with all of that hustle and bustle, sometimes we can also find ourselves uttering words of frustration as meals are burnt or we realize that we don't have that one ingredient to make grandma's favorite dish.

National Night Out (NNO) , August 6, 7-9pm, is the nation's night out against crime. In this event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (http://www.natw.org/), Oakland residents are encouraged to join with their neighbors to have a neighborhood block party, ice cream social or other outdoor event to build neighborhood spirit and unity - the first defense against crime. Research shows that when neighbors know each other and look out for each other, crime goes down.

From noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, participating merchants will host trick-or-treating along both sides of College Avenue, from Alcatraz to Broadway.
