Thursday, July 9, 2015

Take a stroll by the Rockridge Temescal Greenbelt near Cavour and along Redondo, and admire the good work accomplished by the volunteers attending the DMV Neighbors Association annual June Cleanup. The crew cleared a massively weed-choked 20-yard stretch of the channel.

Frog Park Achievements Attract Park Supporters and Planners to Tour

Saturday, May 9, 2015

Alerted by a report on Frog Park in the February 2014 issue of Landscape Architecture, Greater & Greener designed a mobile workshop tour of Frog Park for attendees at its current biennial conference in San Francisco.

Forty workshop participants were guided through the park in mid-April as FROG chair Carol Behr and FROG committee member Barney Smits described the remarkable history of the park from its conception to its hands-on construction by more than 1,300 community volunteers, and the continuing volunteer support for its ever-growing features.

DMV: 'Get Ready for Spring'

Monday, April 13, 2015

It's time to get ready for spring and summer at our local open-space gem, the Rockridge Temescal Greenbelt and Frog Park. Come out for a community work day on Earth Day, Saturday April 18, 9 a.m. to noon, sponsored by FROG and the DMV Neighbors Association.

Tasks at Big and Little Frog will be to remove debris, turn fibar (the bark-like cushioning material under the play structures), sift and clean sand, care for plants in the butterfly garden and along the path, and rake out the pond so the creek can flow again.

Farewell to the Big Euc

Wednesday, February 18, 2015

The familiar sign-off to announcements of DMV Neighbors Association-sponsored cleanup days along Temescal Creek - ÒMeet at the big eucalyptus at the corner of Cavour and RedondoÓ - will change soon. As I write, the city is in process of removing the venerable giant. While it's sad for many reasons, the tree is diseased, damaged, and dangerous. Over the past couple of years, huge limbs have fallen on the lawn and adjacent trees, and the nearby sidewalk has just about been destroyed by the tree's roots.

Temescal Creek and the Greenbelt at Year's End

Friday, December 12, 2014

Thinking back over the important achievements of the DMV Neighbors Association in 2014, the most vital accomplishment was to bring together residents to become neighbors, neighbors to become friends, and diverse people from multiple generations to care for and benefit from our portion of Temescal Creek.

Frog 2014: Year of the Swings

Friday, December 12, 2014

Based on a community survey and outreach at Frog Park throughout 2012 and 2013, in 2014 we embarked on a $50,000 community fundraising drive to add a bevy of new play features: bucket swings, more regular swings, a merry-go-round climber, pole spinners and a see-saw.

This fundraising effort has included:

Creek to Bay Day 2014: Lively and Ambitious Volunteers Spiff Up Temescal Creek and Greenbelt

Friday, October 3, 2014

Eighty-five volunteers wielding rakes, brooms, pick-up sticks, shovels, hoes, trowels, McLeod tools (useful for removing slough and berm from a trail and tamping or compacting tread), and plenty of muscle and enthusiasm spent three hours the morning of September 20 making the creek portion of the Rockridge Temescal Greenbelt a cleaner, prettier place.

Creek to Bay Day, September; Fun at the June Interim Creek Cleanup

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Saturday, June 20, marked the summer solstice and the DMV Neighbors AssociationÕs annual June Interim Creek Cleanup in the Rockridge Temescal Greenbelt. The group tackled pruning, weeding, ivy eradication, and trash pickup, and removed some non-native volunteer small trees and shrubs before they could get out of hand. A good time was had by all, and a lot was accomplished. Stroll by and admire the creek between Cavour and Clarke.
