Pedal for Education, May 16: Support Ride for a Reason

The 2015 Ride for a Reason cycling rally is Saturday, May 16, when a large group of cyclists will ride to the State Capitol to raise money and awareness for quality public education. Proceeds from this annual event support six Oakland schools: Claremont, Edna Brewer, Emerson Elementary, Oakland International, Oakland Tech and Westlake.

Ride for a Reason, now in its sixth year, is a two-wheeled protest to advocate for more state funding for public schools, and a fundraiser for programs that support student creativity and a nurturing environment in six Oakland schools.

Our goals this year are 250 riders in Sacramento and $120,000 raised for six Oakland schools: Claremont Middle School; Edna Brewer; Emerson Elementary; Oakland International High; Oakland Technical High; and Westlake Middle School.

I spent a chunk of the first week of this school year in tears. Some were the predictable mom tears for the “baby” in our family starting kindergarten, while another child began middle school (with all those imagined big, bad kids). But many of them were tears of concern and frustration.

October Town Hall Meeting -- Rockridge Schools

This month's regular Town Hall meeting focuses on Rockridge's public schools.  Oakland School Board President (and our representative), Jody London, will talk about the school district's startegis planning process.  She will also introduce the principals of Rockridge's public schools:

Chabot, Peralta, and Emerson Elementary Schools

Claremont Middle School, and

Oakland Technical High School

Each principal will talk about their school and how they are working to make it better.
