Following up on a commitment made at the January RCPC Town Hall meeting, representatives of BART, the City, and Motivate (the bikeshare provider) are beginning the process of re-evaluating possible sites for a bikeshare station for the Ford GoBike bikeshare program.  The program is cosponsored by the City, Motivate, and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and bikeshare stations are being located in many cities throughout the Bay Area.  The Rockridge BART station location is a key location within Rockridge, with space for up to 35 bikes.

The current location is directly in front of the Oakland Firestorm memorial tile mural, located on the west side of College Ave. along the exterior walls of the BART station stairwell, along with a memorial plaque.  While some have commented that it's a good use of an underutilized space, others, particularly those living in Rockridge when the firestorm destroyed many homes in Upper Rockridge, feel the location is disrespectful to the memorial.

The City, BART , and Motivate have currently identified three alternative locations around the BART station that they feel are feasible.  (If you have suggestions for alternative locations, you should e-mail them to KOlsen@oaklandnet.com.)  The walk-through of the three currently identified sites (and any others suggested before then) will be on Thursday, February 22nd from 5:30 to 6:30 PM, and will be open to the public.

After the walk-through, the City, BART, and Motivate will review the comments from the walk-through and will present their conclusions to the public as part of the March RCPC Town Hall, wich will occur at the Rockridge Branch Library on March 15th, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.  Following that meeting, the City, BART and Motivate will finalize the site location and plan how it will be implemented, and permanant station placement will happen diring the Summer.  The City and Motivate have agreed that this move will not be counted against the 10% of Oakland bikeshare sites that may be moved without charge to the City.
