City to purchase CCA student dorm for affordable housing

On Thursday, August 20, 2020, the City of Oakland announced it had reached tentative agreement with the California College of Arts to purchase the Clifton Hall dormitory on the school's Oakland campus.  The dormitory, built in 2005 and the recipient of an architectural award that year, was put up for sale in connection with CCA's moving its campus to San Francisco.

Agenda for October 23rd Land Use Committee Meeting

The Land Use Committee will meet this Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7:30 PM in the upstairs meeting room at the Rockridge branch library.

The main agenda item will be a recap/discussion of last Wednesday's Planning Commission scoping session for the California College of Arts campus redevelopment project, including summary of topics addressed and a critique of various comments presented.

The seond agenda item will be a brief preview of next weeks meeting of RCPC representatives with the City to discuss the Rockridge Housing Study.

Agenda for September 25th Land Use Committee Meeting

There will be a short meeting of the land use committee at 7:30 PM on September 25th in the upstairs meeting room of the Rockridge Branch Library.  The purpose of the meeting will be to hear an update on the [lack of] progress on Phase II of the Shops at the Ridge project at the corner of Broadway and Pleasant Valley Boulevard.

RCPC September Town Hall - Rockridge Transportation Issues

A sizeable crowd gathered at the Rockridge Library meeting room on September 20th to hear speakers address numerous Rockridge transportation issues.  While there was no official representative of Oakland's Department of Transportation ("OakDOT") present, a variety of speakers, including RCPC's transportation committee chair, Alden Conner, provided information on topics ranging from the reconfiguration of the Rockridge BART's Ford Gobike bikeshare station to mini-roundabouts on Shafter Ave.

RCPC Annual Meeting and April Town Hall - Rockridge Transportation Projects

On April 19th, 2018, RCPC held its annual meeting and April Town Hall at the Rockridge Branch Library.  A total of twenty-nine Rockridge residents signed in for the election, above the minimum quorum requirement of twenty-five.  An additional eight Rockridge residents voted on Saturday at a polling place in front of the library.  At the meeting, the five candidates for the Board of Directors: Ashley Cruz, M.C.

Update on Senators Wiener's and Skinner's new housing upzone bill

The February Rockridge News featured an article on Senators Scott Wiener's (D-San Francisco) and Nancy Skinner's (D-Oakland-Berkeley) bill, which would mandate residential upzoning near transit stations and major transit line stops statewide.  Faced with significant opposition to their bill, they have added a series of amendments.  (The attached file shows the bill's amended language as of March 1, 2018.)

Following up on their success last year in passing SB 35 (see Land Use Committee Update article for January 2018), State Senators Scott Wiener (San Francisco) and Nancy Skinner (Oakland/Berkeley) have introduced a new bill, SB 827, intended to address California's housing crisis.  The bill would create a "transit-rich housing bonus" that would apply to areas near transit stations or "high quality transit corridors" (bus service at least every 15 minutes during peak travel hours).  In those areas, local zoning height limits would be replaced by height limits

City Responds to Community Questions and Comments About Planned Broadway Changes

In the weeks since the May 29 community meeting hosted by the city of Oakland to present planned improvements to Broadway between Broadway Terrace and Ocean View Drive (see June 2014 issue of The Rockridge News for a report of the meeting), staff and their consultants have transcribed and to over 70 comments and questions conveyed at and since the meeting.

The latest plans for pedestrian crossing, bikeway, lane configuration and related improvements on Broadway between College Avenue and Ocean View Drive will be presented by city staff Thursday, May 29, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Rockridge Branch Library community meeting room on the second floor.

Following review of a traffic study, plans are moving forward on the project, which is intended to improve safety in the corridor for all roadway users.

The project includes the following components:

Cafe Proposal for 5269 Broadway (minor conditional use permit required)
The committee discussed a proposal for a cafe to be located at 5269 Broadway. It would be open during the day and cater to students at the California College of Art. Although an applicant representative did not attend the meeting, committee members present felt they had sufficient information about the proposal to make an informed recommendation to the board of directors. The recommendation is that RCPC not oppose the application.
